Disaster and Global Mental Health

It is widely recognized that natural disasters and wars leave deep scars on people’s hearts.
Since the end of World War II, Japan has fortunately not been directly involved in armed conflicts,
but it has repeatedly experienced large-scale earthquakes.

In particular, following the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995,
public attention to the psychological care of disaster survivors grew significantly,
leading to the development of the field of Disaster and Mental Health.

In recent years, due to the impact of global climate change,
natural disasters such as floods, heatwaves, droughts, and wildfires have been increasing worldwide.
Against this backdrop, we believe that sharing Japan’s accumulated experience in providing psychological care
during disaster recovery with the international community is one of the important missions of Japan,
a country highly prone to disasters.

Through this website, we aim to share our research and practice on “Disasters and Global Mental Health.”
